Getting On The Right Side Of The PE Ratio Trend
John Templeton, of Templeton Funds, says to "buy bargains," meaning, buy stocks when they are at their best value. When the market is at a low, investors find the best bargains. More specifically, this means when the P/E ratio is at a low point, as investors experience the best returns by buying when P/E ratios are low and selling when P/E ratios are high. That makes sense, as the value of stocks and the market increases when the P/E ratio rises. Buying when the market P/E ratio is at a high level increases the risk that you will experience a negative return, whereas buying when the P/E ratio is at a low point significantly increases the likelihood you will experience high returns in the subsequent years.
